Pitch adaptation in different age groups: boundary tones versus global pitch
نویسندگان
چکیده
Linguistic adaptation is a process by which interlocutors adjust their production to their environment. In the context of humancomputer interaction, past research showed that adult speakers adapt to computer speech in various manners but less is known about younger age groups. We report the results of three priming experiments in which children in different age groups interacted with a prerecorded computer voice. The goal of the experiments was to determine to what extent children copy the pitch properties of the interlocutor. Based on the dialogue model of Pickering & Garrod, we predicted that children would be more likely to adapt to pitch primes that were meaningful in the context (high or low boundary tone) compared to primes with no apparent functionality (global pitch manipulation). This prediction was confirmed by our data. Moreover, we observed a decreasing trend in adaptation in the older age groups compared to the younger ones.

The Effects of Boundary Tones on the f0 Scaling of Lexical Tones
Many languages display a pattern in which the f0 values of tones are higher in a phrase ending in a high boundary tone than in one ending with a low boundary tone. In some cases it is only the tones closest to the boundary tone that are affected, while in others it affects all tones in the phrase. An account is suggested in this paper, according to which these effects are due to perceptually-ba...
متن کاملExploring Boundary Tones in Taiwan Southern Min
This study explores boundary pitch movements in Taiwan Southern Min (TSM) by investigating pitch variations of final particles. Based on annotation research on the pitch targets of final particles in a 117-minute spontaneous speech corpus, it is proposed that instead of viewing such pitch variations as lexical tones, these variations should be referred to as three types boundary pitch movements...
متن کاملDifferent Types of Pitch Angle Control Strategies Used in Wind Turbine System Applications
The most common controller in wind turbine is the blade pitch angle control in order to get the desired power. Controlling the pitch angle in wind turbines has a direct impact on the dynamic performance of the machine and fluctuations in the power systems. Due to constant changes in wind speed, the wind turbines are of nonlinear and multivariate system. The design of a controller that can ad...
متن کاملBoundary tones in Spanish declaratives: Modelling sustained pitch
The aim of this paper is to present a phonological description of the boundary tones in final and nonfinal declarative sentences in Spanish, drawn from a read news corpus and a dialogue corpus. The final clauses tend to finish with L*L% and sometimes L+H*L%. Four different pitch configurations can be found for non-final patterns: a rise (L*H%), a fallto-mid (H*!H%), a fall-rise (H*LH%) and a su...
متن کاملMismatch Responses to Pitch Changes in Early Infancy
We investigated the emergence of discriminative responses to pitch by recording 2-, 3-, and 4-month-old infants' electro-encephalogram responses to infrequent pitch changes in piano tones. In all age groups, infants' responses to deviant tones were significantly different from responses to standard tones. However, two types of mismatch responses were observed simultaneously in the difference wa...
